The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons requires that all veterinary students undertake Extra Mural Studies
(EMS). Students are responsible for finding suitable EMS placements and funding associated costs.
Most students can complete their EMS requirements at practices within commuting distance of their home,
but some students find they need to travel further*** and incur accommodation costs in addition to travel
                                     expenses whilst completing EMS placements.
In some parts of the final two years of the veterinary programme, students will need to have access to a car.
It may be possible to share transport with another student, so a driver’s license is helpful but not essential.
A small, second-hand car is likely to cost approx. £3,000 to £5,000 with the cost of petrol at £1.70 per litre at
                                     the time of publishing***.
During the first three years of the BSc in Veterinary Nursing, students will be undertaking a minimum of
1800 hours of placement time as required by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. While placements
will be allocated, students will need to fund the travel costs to the placements.
                                     * Average price per student for on campus accommodation for the duration of contract.
