All PhD students are initially registered for an MPhil with the transfer to a PhD made retrospective to the beginning of their studies following a satisfactory appraisal at the end of their first year.  As part of this appraisal process first year students have to provide a 5,000 word written report as well as attending an oral presentation. In subsequent years students are asked to give a presentation and submit a report.
