During its annual meeting today, The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) announced that Royal Veterinary College Principal, Professor Stuart Reid CBE FRSE FRCVS, has been elected as an international member. The NAM is one of three academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the United States.

Election to NAM is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine and recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Each year only 10 members of the international community outside the USA are elected to membership.

Professor Stuart Reid is a leading scientist in the UK, with an illustrious career in veterinary medicine. He is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as a specialist in veterinary epidemiology, as well as an expert in veterinary public health by the European Board of Veterinary Specialists. He was also appointed a Fellow of the RCVS at their most recent Fellowship Day.

Stuart, along with other members of the election class, will be formally welcomed to the NAM at its next annual meeting, which also celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Stuart Reid, said “I am delighted and flattered to be judged worthy of joining the few international colleagues, and even fewer veterinarians, in the National Academy of Medicine. It is testament to the Academy’s inclusive, global view and commitment to One Health that those from outside the USA and the medical profession are welcome. It will be an honour to serve the Academy and, in doing so, bring our respective sectors and communities closer together for the common good.”

Victor J. Dzau, President of National Academy of Medicine, said: “ The newly elected members represent the most exceptional scholars and leaders whose remarkable work has advanced science, medicine, and health in the U.S. and around the globe.

“Their expertise will be vital to addressing today’s most pressing health and scientific challenges and informing the future of health and medicine for the benefit of us all. I am honoured to welcome these esteemed individuals to the National Academy of Medicine.”
