During its annual meeting today, The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) announced that Royal Veterinary College Principal, Professor Stuart Reid CBE FRSE FRCVS, has been elected as an international member. The NAM is one of three academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in the United States.

Election to NAM is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine and recognises individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Each year only 10 members of the international community outside the USA are elected to membership.

Professor Stuart Reid is a leading scientist in the UK, with an illustrious career in veterinary medicine. He is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as a specialist in veterinary epidemiology, as well as an expert in veterinary public health by the European Board of Veterinary Specialists. He was also appointed a Fellow of the RCVS at their most recent Fellowship Day.

Throughout his career, Stuart has contributed more than 160 scientific publications and secured over £15 million in competitive funding for research. He has chaired the European Committee on Veterinary Education, been Honorary Secretary to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and served as President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2014-2015.  He has also made active contributions to public service, including as Chair of Trustees of The Donkey Sanctuary, and sits on the board of the UK Food Standards Agency. He was made CBE in 2018.

Stuart, along with other members of the election class, will be formally welcomed to the NAM at its next annual meeting, which also celebrates its 50th anniversary.
