t the end of January 2020, I travelled to Stockholm to receive the BERTEBOS prize, conferred by the Royal Swedish Academy of
Agriculture and Forestry, from HE Marshall of the Realm Fredrick Wersall. The prize was awarded for "outstanding achievements to develop and improve the control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (TAD) and ‘new’ diseases around the world.”
For eight years (2000 to 2007), I was the Secretary of the Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme, based in the Food and Agriculture Organization of
the United Nations in Rome, where I worked from 1974 to 2007. A major part of my work there related to the global eradication of rinderpest (cattle plague), eradicated in 2002 but achieved officially in 2011. I retired in 2007 and am now an independent veterinary consultant.

of Conservation Through Public Health, Dr Gladys
Kalema-Zikusoka (BVetMed, 1995) is the recipient of the 2020 Aldo Leopold Award. This award was established by the American Society of Mammalogists in 2002 to recognize outstanding contributions to the conservation of mammals and their habitats.

some of whom have mentored me, including Russell Mittermeier, George Schaller and Rodrigo Medellin”, Dr Gladys noted upon receiving the good news.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, Gladys was unable to travel to America to follow normal procedures of receiving her award, however, there is a plan
to have her give a virtual presentation during a conference which is slated to take place next year.
Congratulations to Gladys upon this latest achievement.
