Celebrating graduation by cycling from Hawkshead to...Hawkshead
To mark their
graduation, four
RVC alumni (Ben,
Seth, Kristen and
Angharad) cycled
unsupported from the
Hawkshead Campus,
home of the world’s
number one vet school, to Hawkshead Cumbria, home of Beatrix Potter – a distance of more than 300 miles and 20,000ft climbing over five days.
Along the route they enjoyed many hills, rainstorms, cute dogs, mountains, dairy farms, sunshine and met both RVC alumni and prospective students.
The Hawkshead brewery at the end was certainly a welcome sight, especially
for Kristen, who returned from Illinois to join the ride after finishing one equine internship and before starting another – also in the USA.

Followed by a 105 mile running race...
Not content with cycling to the Lake District, Seth set off on the Lakeland 100 – a 105 mile running circumnavigation
of the national park, only a few days
after finishing the bike ride. The non- stop race is regarded as one of the toughest ultramarathons in the UK, with approximately half of those who toe the start line dropping out before making it back within the 40-hour cut off time.
This is the third time Seth had entered the race, but with the rigours of rotations and revising for finals, a third finishers medal was by no means guaranteed. Conditions on the race weekend were far from ideal with sweltering humidity, thick foliage
and slick mud adding to the already challenging 7,000m of climbing and descending along the unmarked course.
After 31 hours and 17 seconds of running, walking and shuffling, Seth

returned in the early hours of Sunday exhausted but elated to complete the race for the third time.
He said: “I knew it would be tough but the scenery made it worth it, running through the night and seeing the dawn over the fells gave me a second wind.”
Before starting work as a farm vet in Cheshire, next up for Seth is the Tor de Drets, an 85 mile race across the Italian Alps this autumn.
