Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) is a pestivirus infection of cattle which causes a number of clinical problems in cattle, including infertility, respiratory diseases and fatal mucosal disease. Scientists from around the world are working hard to discover and develop ways to manage and mitigate the spread of BVD.

Angela Damaso, a lecturer at The Royal Veterinary College has been recognised on an international stage for work on just that.  Her case report entitled Control of BVD in a Dairy farm – Convincing strategies has been awarded third prize at the BVDZero Awards, international awards run by Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica GmbH. The awards aim to encourage veterinary practitioners and other stakeholders of the cattle industry to communicate interesting cases of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) thus increasing awareness of this disease among all players of the cattle industry.

The Award ceremony took place in Frankfurt, on the 29 ^th November 2016, as part of a broader conference where leading academics shared research and knowledge with their counterparts from across the world.

Angela Damaso said: “I was thrilled to have my case shortlisted! The report presents a cost-benefit analysis of a Bovine Viral Disease control programme, dealt with by the Welsh branch of The Royal Veterinary College. I was amazed that my colleagues described cases similar to the ones we observe in Wales, including their challenges and successes in tackling this disease.

“I hope this award helps to increase awareness to veterinarians, farmers and also vet students of the dangers of BVD to the cattle farming sector in the UK and Europe, and that all players work together towards the control and prevention of this disease.”
